The horror thriller Sinners continues its impressive reign at the box office, pulling in a robust $45 million in its second weekend. Directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, the vampire-themed film experienced a tiny 6% drop from its $48 million opening—a rare feat, especially for a horror movie, where second-week declines are usually much sharper.
So far, Sinners has amassed a strong $122.5 million domestically and $161.6 million globally against its $90 million production budget. With glowing reviews and audience enthusiasm driving repeat viewings, the film is expected to maintain momentum even as the busy summer movie season unfolds.
A notable highlight in Sinners is the introduction of the Smokestack Twins, a pair of memorable characters rooted in Yoruba Orisha spirituality. In a recent interview, Coogler and Jordan revealed that the twins were inspired by Ìbejì, the twin deities representing duality and harmony. This rich cultural layer adds depth and resonance to the chilling narrative, helping Sinners stand out from typical horror offerings.
Meanwhile, the battle for second place at the box office was close. Disney’s re-release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith edged out The Accountant 2 with $25.2 million from 2,775 theatres. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Revenge of the Sith also earned $17 million internationally, bringing its weekend global total to a staggering $42 million—a remarkable achievement for a film that's been easily accessible for nearly two decades.
Following closely, Ben Affleck’s The Accountant 2 debuted in third place with $24.5 million domestically. The R-rated action sequel launched in 71 overseas markets as well, adding $13.7 million to its coffers for a global opening of $38.2 million. While it’s a solid start, the sequel’s hefty $80 million budget means it will need sustained interest worldwide to be deemed a success. Still, an “A-” CinemaScore from audiences bodes well for strong word-of-mouth in the coming weeks.
As summer blockbuster season heats up, Sinners clearly has captured audiences' imaginations, blending horror thrills with cultural mythology, and proving that original storytelling can still draw big crowds.
