Overview
Many have heard of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the legendary artist from the 70s and 80s. But some may not know that his mother Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was also a legend in her own right, as a women's rights activist unabashedly pushing for equality in Nigeria at a time when people weren't having those conversations. "Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti" the film emerges as a new vivid exploration of Ransome-Kuti's journey. From growing up and learning about the importance of education, to her groundbreaking step in becoming the first girl to attend Abeokuta Grammar School at just 13, going to London and then becoming emboldened to return to Nigeria to step into her role as an educator and organizer.

Great documentary and storytelling
The movie has awesome storytelling, acting, cinematography, and cast representation. The movie being about the Egba land lacks the presence of the Egba intonation, some instances where it was heard seem to be consciously pronounced and forced.
I enjoyed the movie.

NOLLYWOOD'S FLAGSHIP BIOPIC
Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti is an incredibly powerful showcase of the life and time of the legendary character, who was a great force of change over her lifetime. The movie does an excellent portrayal of her influence, impact, and motivation in the liberation of the egba women from the tyrannical grip of their king.
Anchored by Joke Silva's engrossing narration, and Kehinde Bankole's terrific performance, the movie paces along perfectly as we journey through Funmi's life from being the first female student at the Abeokuta Grammar School, to her creation of the Abeokuta Women's Union. The storytelling is wonderful and nuanced, as are the perfromances of the various actors featured in the movie. While this is very much Funmi's story, the writers still do a great job at polishing the supporting characters in this story, particularly her husband, Israel, and her children.
It is a well-narrated biopic that highlights Funmi's role as an activist, and the numerous challenges she had to overcome to achieve the changes she facilitated over her lifetime. Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti is an exemplary film, and it will be looked back upon for many years as an industry standard for a compelling biopic.
