Could Rainn Wilson be stretching his way into the DC Universe? The actor best known for playing Dwight Schrute on The Office has openly expressed his desire to play Plastic Man in James Gunn’s rebooted DCU.
Wilson and Gunn share a long-standing creative partnership, starting with Gunn’s 2010 dark comedy Super, where Wilson played a DIY vigilante. They later teased fans with a possible crossover when Wilson’s character made a brief cameo in the Gunn-produced 2019 horror flick Brightburn. With Gunn now serving as co-head of DC Studios, speculation is running wild about whether this friendship could lead to a big-screen superhero transformation for Wilson.
Speaking at Fan Expo Chicago, Wilson revealed:
"I've hinted to James several times, like, 'Hey man, you've got to do something with Plastic Man.' He's one of my favorite DC characters, and I loved him growing up," Wilson said. "He had a wicked sense of humor. The Plastic Man comics were very, very funny. That would be a fun one to unearth. I would be a fan even if I wasn't in it. I would love to watch that... And play him."
Patrick “Eel” O’Brian began as a small-time crook until a chemical accident gave him the ability to stretch and shape-shift his body into almost anything—from everyday objects to wild disguises. With his bizarre sense of humour and nearly limitless powers, Plastic Man became one of DC’s most unique superheroes.
Even Batman has acknowledged Plastic Man as one of the Justice League’s most powerful members—yes, more versatile than Superman in some cases.
Interestingly, James Gunn once pitched a Plastic Man film to Warner Bros. in the early 2000s with Matthew Lillard in the lead role, during their Scooby-Doo collaboration. That project didn’t materialise, and years later, Warner Bros. explored a female-led version of Plastic Man, but that idea was also shelved.
With Gunn now calling the shots at DC Studios, the odds may finally be in favour of the elastic hero making his big-screen debut—and Rainn Wilson is ready to suit up.
