In a notably quiet post-election weekend, Hollywood studios held off on releasing major films, partly due to heightened advertising rates and potential concerns over unrest following the recent presidential election, in which Republican candidate Donald Trump triumphed over Democratic opponent Kamala Harris. With no major new blockbuster on the marquee, Sony’s Venom: The Last Dance remained dominant, claiming the top spot at the domestic box office for the third consecutive weekend.
Venom 3 pulled in an estimated $16.2 million across 3,905 theatres, bringing its domestic earnings to $114.8 million. Overseas, the film added $33 million, with a foreign total now at $279.4 million and an impressive global haul of $394.2 million, including $82.8 million from China.
This strong showing by Venom: The Last Dance also surpassed the debut of Amazon MGM's holiday film Red One, starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans. Red One launched internationally with $26.6 million from 75 markets. The decision for an early international release aimed to avoid competition with Gladiator II, which opens overseas next weekend and premieres in North America on November 22.
In the U.S., Lionsgate and Kingdom Films made a notable entry with Best Christmas Pageant Ever, a faith-centered family film based on Barbara Robinson’s 1972 classic. Directed by The Chosen creator Dallas Jenkins, it earned an estimated $11.1 million, edging out A24’s horror title Heretic, which pulled in $11 million. The close second-place race will be finalized on Monday when the official numbers are tallied.
