Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried have signed on to lead The Housemaid, a psychological thriller based on Freida McFadden's best-selling novel. Directed by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, A Simple Favor), the film is set to be produced by Lionsgate, adding another exciting project to the studio's upcoming slate.
In The Housemaid, Sweeney plays Millie, a struggling young woman who finds relief in her new job as a housemaid for the wealthy Nina (Seyfried) and her husband, Andrew. However, Millie soon discovers that the family she works for harbours dark and dangerous secrets that rival her own personal struggles. The screenplay adaptation is penned by Rebecca Sonnenshine, with Feig and Laura Fischer producing alongside Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures.
Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group chair, Adam Fogelson, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "A great filmmaker and a great cast with a great script from a great book is a terrific place to start. My prior experiences with Paul and Amanda have been nothing short of spectacular, and Sydney is as talented and compelling as can be."
Both Sweeney and Seyfried, known for their dynamic roles in Euphoria, The Dropout, and Mamma Mia, will also serve as executive producers on the film. Erin Westerman, co-president of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, shared her excitement: "Sydney and Amanda are perfect for their roles—they’re mysterious, nuanced, and incredibly skilled at becoming characters who don’t reveal everything right away."
Paul Feig, who worked with Seyfried on A Simple Favor and its upcoming sequel, is eager to collaborate with the actresses again, this time crafting a thrilling and suspense-filled narrative with powerful female leads at its core.
The project adds to Sweeney’s growing filmography, including her upcoming role as trailblazing boxer Christy Martin in a biopic. Seyfried continues to earn critical acclaim for her portrayal of complex characters, making The Housemaid a highly anticipated psychological thriller.
