Although it has not been the funniest year in the world of film and TV, this year has still given us plenty to laugh about.
Here are six movies that you can watch for some laughs and a change of mood.
From the desk of Nobody director Ilya Naishuller, the film tells the story of a mismatched pair, US President Will Derringer (John Cena) and British Prime Minister Sam Clarke (Idris Elba), two of the world’s most powerful and influential men. They are always at odds with each other due to conflicting ideals, thereby straining relations between their nations. Both world leaders are forced to spend time together to smooth things out. Still, their jet is attacked, sending them on an action-packed adventure where they unite and ally with MI6 agent Noel Bisset (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) to stop a global conspiracy from unfolding.
Veteran action movie star Liam Neeson breathes new life into The Naked Gun franchise in this hilarious legacy sequel. Neeson effortlessly embodies Lt. Frank Drebin Jr as he investigates a murder alongside a stellar cast including Pamela Anderson and Paul Walter Hauser. The film is a blend of modern spoofs and the absurdist humour of its predecessor. The movie got an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Based on the popular 2011 video game Minecraft, the film stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, and Jennifer Coolidge as four misfits who are taken through a portal to a strange cubic wonderland where nothing makes sense.
With the help of an expert crafter, they must use their imagination to finish their quest and get back to the real world.
One of Them Days is a hysterical comedy that centres around roommates and best friends Dreux (Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA), who learn that Alyssa’s boyfriend has squandered their rent money. Facing imminent eviction, Dreux and Alyssa must scramble in a race against the clock, while also striving to keep their friendship intact.
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy
Renée Zellweger’s put-upon Londoner, now a mum twice over, is still reeling from the death of her beloved Mark Darcy, but Shazzer and the gang are determined to get her back out there. ‘Out there’ is a place where humiliating sexting disasters, heartwarming triumphs and some classic Bridge pratfalls await. Hugh Grant delivers another hilariously wolfish turn as Daniel Cleaver and Emma Thompson steals scenes as Bridget’s slightly annoyed doctor—a treat.
The Studio (Series)
As movies struggle to stay alive and relevant, Matt (Seth Rogen) and his core team of infighting executives battle their insecurities as they wrangle narcissistic artists and craven corporate overlords in the ever-elusive pursuit of making great films. With their power suits masking their never-ending sense of panic, every party, set visit, casting decision, marketing meeting, and award show presents them with an opportunity for glittering success or career-ending catastrophe. As someone who eats, sleeps, and breathes movies, it's the job Matt's been pursuing his whole life, and it may very well destroy him.
There you have it, from the romantic (Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy) to the weird (The Studio), this year has given us a notable bunch of eye-watering and rib-cracking movies. And with a good handful of months still left, the year is sure to have a few more laughs in store for us.
