After years of anticipation, Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin have officially completed the script for The Batman: Part II, the much-awaited sequel to the critically acclaimed 2022 film starring Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight.
Reeves marked the milestone with a cryptic yet exciting post on social media—a blurred black-and-white image of the script cover, featuring a bat symbol and the faintly legible title, The Batman: Part II. His caption, Partners in Crime (Fighters), shared in collaboration with Tomlin, hints at the potential arrival of Robin, a character notably absent from the first instalment.
Originally announced in April 2022, shortly after the release of The Batman on March 4, the sequel is set to return to theatres on October 1, 2027. The original film was a major box office success, grossing $369.3 million domestically and $772 million globally, and helped launch a gritty, noir-driven take on Gotham’s vigilante justice.
The Batman featured a powerhouse cast including:
Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman
Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle / Catwoman
Paul Dano as The Riddler
Colin Farrell as Oz / The Penguin
Jeffrey Wright as Lt. James Gordon
Andy Serkis as Alfred
John Turturro as Carmine Falcone
The film's gritty universe is also expanding on the small screen with the upcoming HBO Max series The Penguin, which has already become the third-most-watched Max debut globally, behind The House of the Dragon and The Last of Us.
Fans have been eager for updates, and some grew impatient during the long scriptwriting process. But DC Studios co-head James Gunn weighed in recently, urging fans to trust the creative process. “People should get off Matt’s nuts,” Gunn told Entertainment Weekly. “He doesn’t owe you something because you like his movie. You like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.”
Gunn confirmed that the script was expected in June and said he’s excited to read it, even though he hadn’t seen it yet. “Matt’s excited. I talk to Matt all the time. I’m totally excited about it,” he added.
Now that the script is complete, the countdown to The Batman: Part II officially begins — and the shadows of Gotham are stirring once again.
