Nicola Coughlan, who portrays Penelope Featherington in the hit series Bridgerton, has offered an exciting glimpse into the upcoming fourth season. In a recent interview with Good Morning America at the 2024 Time 100 Next Gala, Coughlan revealed that her character and Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton) will return in season 4 as a happily married couple.
“It’s very fun to be playing like a happily married person with a very cute baby,” Coughlan said, hinting at a more peaceful and romantic journey for the duo following their intense friends-to-lovers arc in season 3. “They went through all their strife last time, so they get to come back and just be in love and have the best time together,” she added.
While season 3 saw the revelation of Penelope’s secret identity as Lady Whistledown, creating tension in her relationship with Colin, season 4 promises a lighter storyline for the couple, showcasing their newfound marital bliss. The upcoming season will also shift focus to Colin’s brother, Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson), whose love story with Sophie Baek (portrayed by Yerin Ha) is set to unfold.
In addition, Francesca Bridgerton’s (Hannah Dodd) storyline will take center stage, and fans are eagerly anticipating a queer love story between Francesca and Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza), a new direction from the books. Addressing this change, Coughlan expressed her excitement, stating, “I know as a cast, we've been really craving a queer storyline, and that representation is so, so important.”
