The 2024 Marrakech International Film Festival is set to welcome a remarkable lineup of jurors, with visionary Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino presiding over the jury. Guadagnino steps in to replace Danish director Thomas Vinterberg, who withdrew for personal reasons, as announced by the festival. Known for his evocative storytelling and deep cinematic flair, Guadagnino expressed excitement for his role, reflecting on his own long-standing connection to Marrakech, where his "Arab DNA" and passion for cinema converge.
Joining him on the jury are prominent figures from around the globe, promising a vibrant blend of perspectives. Among the esteemed jurors are acclaimed Iranian director Ali Abbasi, celebrated Indian filmmaker Zoya Akhtar, Oscar-winning American actress Patricia Arquette, Belgian star Virginie Efira, and Moroccan actress Nadia Kounda. Adding further star power to the panel are British-American actor Andrew Garfield and Australian breakout Jacob Elordi, both marking a significant presence as they lend their insights to the festival’s 21st edition. Argentine filmmaker Santiago Mitre completes the team, each juror bringing unique expertise to the selection process.
The Marrakech International Film Festival, held in the iconic city from November 29 to December 7, has become a beloved destination for cinephiles and creators alike. Known for its distinctively Moroccan atmosphere, the festival celebrates a rich array of global and regional voices in cinema. For Guadagnino, who fondly recalls his first visit more than 20 years ago, the city of Marrakech and the art of film are inseparable. “It is a tremendous honor to lead a wonderful jury for this edition," he noted, "and I am thrilled to see all the great movies and to meet all the great filmmakers participating this year."
As Guadagnino’s latest film, Queer, starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey, prepares for its U.S. release on November 27, his role at Marrakech underscores his international cinematic reach and ongoing dedication to fostering creative voices. The festival’s juried competition will showcase some of the finest works in contemporary cinema, reaffirming Marrakech’s status as a cultural crossroads and cinematic hub.
