The 2024 Emmy Awards are just around the corner, and this year’s competition is fiercer than ever, with major shows like Ripley, Shogun, Abbott Elementary, Slow Horses, The 3 Body Problem, and Only Murders in the Building all vying for top prizes in Los Angeles. Big names like Idris Elba, Jennifer Aniston, Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster, and Robert Downey Jr. are in the running for coveted acting awards, making this year’s event a star-studded affair.
This year's ceremony, taking place just eight months after the delayed 2023 Emmys, comes after a year of historic Hollywood strikes. The awards show will be hosted by Canadian father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, best known for their work on the hit show Schitt’s Creek, which dominated the Emmys during the pandemic.
"For two Canadians who won our Emmys in a literal quarantine tent, being asked to host this year in an actual theatre is incentive enough,” the Levys said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to raise a glass to this extraordinary season of television."
In addition to the Levys, stars like Selena Gomez, Viola Davis, Billy Crystal, Jimmy Kimmel, and Steve Martin will present individual awards. A potential West Wing reunion with Martin Sheen, Allison Janney, and Richard Schiff is also on the cards, as is a celebration of Happy Days' 50th anniversary, with Ron Howard and Henry Winkler set to make appearances.
Ahead of the main ceremony, Shogun and The Bear have emerged as the big winners at the Creative Arts Emmys, with Shogun claiming 14 awards and The Bear picking up seven. Shogun's wins include a guest actor award for Néstor Carbonell, alongside honors for cinematography, stunts, editing, and more. Both shows are now front-runners heading into the final night, where the major acting and best series awards will be decided.
This year’s nominations span across drama, comedy, and limited series categories, with The Crown standing out as the only previous winner in the Best Drama Series category. Other drama contenders include Fallout, Shogun, Slow Horses, The Gilded Age, The Morning Show, 3 Body Problem, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. With heavyweights like Succession and Game of Thrones no longer in the running, this category is more wide-open than ever, making it one to watch.
In the limited series category, Baby Reindeer, the gripping account of comedian Richard Gadd’s experience with a stalker, leads the pack. However, its chances could be impacted by ongoing legal action from a real-life woman claiming defamation and privacy violations. Other nominees for best-limited series include Fargo, Ripley, Lessons in Chemistry, and True Detective: Night Country.
The comedy category is set to be dominated by The Bear, despite ongoing debate about whether the show should even be classified as a comedy. Other contenders include Abbott Elementary, Only Murders in the Building, Reservation Dogs, Hacks, and What We Do in the Shadows.
The acting categories are just as packed with star power. Idris Elba (Hijack), Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show), Meryl Streep (Only Murders in the Building), and Robert Downey Jr. (The Sympathizer) are just a few of the major names nominated this year. Other top acting contenders include Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), and Steve Martin (Only Murders in the Building).
Fans of The Bear will be rooting for previous winners Ayo Edebiri and Jeremy Allen White, who want to repeat their Emmy success. Meanwhile, Irish actor Andrew Scott is also in the running for his performance in Netflix's Ripley.
The 2024 Emmy Awards ceremony will occur at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, starting at 8:00 PM ET/5:00 PM PT on Sunday. U.S. viewers can catch the live broadcast on ABC, with streaming options available on Hulu the following day. The ceremony will start at 1:00 AM BST on Monday, though no U.K. broadcaster is scheduled to air the event.
As this year’s Emmys promise excitement, drama, and some memorable reunions, all eyes are on Shogun and The Bear to see if they can maintain their leads, while other shows and stars hope for an upset on TV’s biggest night.
