Peter Dinklage, who stars in the upcoming remake of The Toxic Avenger, revealed that he is unsure when the film will finally see a wide release. Despite a trailer debuting over a year ago and the film boasting an impressive 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, no official release date has been confirmed.
Dinklage, who plays the lead role, explained, "No, I'm not a producer on it. I don't know." He expressed his hope that the film will eventually get its moment in the spotlight, especially considering the positive reception it received at Fantastic Fest in Austin. "It was a really big hit... Hopefully it will have its day in the toxic sun," Dinklage added, praising the film's director, Macon Blair, as one of his favourite artists.
Blair’s reimagining of the 1984 cult classic brings a modern twist to the legendary character. While the original followed Melvin Ferd Junko III’s transformation into a radioactive hero, this contemporary version centres on Winston Gooze, a janitor played by Dinklage. After an accident involving toxic waste, Winston is transformed into a monstrous, superhuman figure who fights against the forces of greed and corruption threatening his community. Alongside its environmental undertones, the film retains its roots in Troma-style mayhem, with an R rating for its trademark violence and gore.
The film's cast includes major stars such as Elijah Wood, Kevin Bacon, Jacob Tremblay, and Taylour Paige, further adding to the buzz. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the release, The Toxic Avenger is poised to be a timely, socially relevant film while still paying homage to the outlandish spirit of the original. Fans of Troma’s unique blend of horror and humour have much to look forward to.
