Disney announced on Sunday that Andra Day will join season two of Percy Jackson and the Olympians as Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom. Athena is the mother of Annabeth Chase, portrayed by Leah Sava Jeffries in the popular series based on Rick Riordan's books.

“I can’t wait to bring her to life and work alongside such talented actors,” Day shared in a video statement after the announcement.

The casting of Day as Athena adds to a series of updates regarding the show's upcoming season, set for release in 2025. Returning cast members include Jeffries as Annabeth, Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, Aryan Simhadri as Grover, Charlie Bushnell as Luke, and Dior Goodjohn as Clarisse. Newcomer Daniel Diemer will appear as Tyson, Percy’s Cyclops half-brother, while Tamara Smart takes on the role of Thalia Grace, daughter of Zeus. Guest stars Sandra Bernhard, Kristen Schaal, and Margaret Cho will portray the Gray Sisters.

Season two will follow the storyline of The Sea of Monsters, the second book in Riordan’s series. Percy Jackson returns to Camp Half-Blood only to discover new challenges: his friendship with Annabeth is evolving, he learns of a newfound brother, Grover has disappeared, and Camp Half-Blood is under threat from Kronos’ forces. Percy’s journey will lead him into the treacherous Sea of Monsters, where unexpected twists await him.

Riordan, alongside showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, will executive produce the second season with a talented team, including Rebecca Riordan, Craig Silverstein, Bert Salke, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, D.J. Goldberg, James Bobin, Jim Rowe, Albert Kim, Jason Ensler, and Sarah Watson.
