The iconic 1980s action drama Knight Rider is gearing up for a big-screen revival. Universal Pictures is developing a feature film based on the hit NBC series, with Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald on board to write the screenplay.
The trio, best known for turning The Karate Kid into Netflix’s smash-hit sequel series Cobra Kai, are also in early talks to direct. They’ll produce the film through their Counterbalance Entertainment banner, alongside Kelly McCormick and David Leitch (The Fall Guy) for 87North, under its first-look deal with Universal. Gary Barber and Chris Stone will produce via Spyglass.
Created by Glen A. Larson, Knight Rider aired from 1982 to 1986 and starred David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a crimefighter partnered with KITT, a futuristic, artificially intelligent car. The series became a cultural phenomenon with its high-octane action, sci-fi concept, and unforgettable synth theme.
A feature adaptation has been in the works for years, but with the Cobra Kai team behind the wheel and Leitch’s action pedigree, this reboot promises a modern spin while honouring the original’s legacy.
No release date has been announced, but expect more updates soon as the project speeds into development.
