The John Wick universe is again expanding, this time venturing into the world of anime. Fans will finally get a deeper look into the legendary “impossible task” that set John Wick on his path of revenge, a storyline that was only teased in the blockbuster films. According to franchise director Chad Stahelski, this new prequel anime will illuminate Wick's earlier life, offering a fresh and exciting perspective on his infamous career.
While the John Wick saga played out over four hit movies, its popularity has led to numerous spin-offs and side projects, including the upcoming anime. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Stahelski shared a significant update on the anime, confirming that it’s "knee-deep in development" and will serve as a prequel to the film series. The anime will focus on the events leading up to John Wick’s retirement, particularly the impossible task that allowed him to leave his violent life behind.
Stahelski explained, "It’s fun that it’s in a different medium. It’s a prequel to the movies… You’re pretty right on [about the impossible task], but it’s animated fun. It’s meant to be fun." He emphasized that the goal is not to follow the same formula as other prequels and sequels, but instead to explore the world of Wick in a way that feels fresh. "We just want to have fun with the Wick world… so let’s go back and use a different medium."
The director also elaborated on the creative freedom the anime format offers, stating that while the films were grounded in action, the anime allows for a “more crazy and nutty” approach. “We can be a lot more explicit in our storytelling and world building... without seeming repetitive, and that’s where we’re putting our energies right now.”
The Mystery Behind the Impossible Task
Fans of the John Wick series know that the impossible task is central to the mythos of the character. In the films, it’s revealed through dialogue that Wick was assigned to eliminate all of the Tarasov family’s enemies in a single night—a mission that even his employers believed was unachievable. By accomplishing it, Wick secured his freedom and was able to retire and live a quiet life with his wife, Helen, until tragedy pulled him back into the violent underworld.
Though it’s only been referenced in the movies, Stahelski’s tease of the anime suggests that fans may finally get to see this legendary evening of destruction unfold in vivid, animated detail. If so, the anime could become one of the most action-packed entries in the John Wick franchise.
