DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot has crossed the $300 million mark at the global box office, solidifying its position as a major animated success of 2024. The Chris Sanders-directed feature, starring Lupita Nyong’o as the voice of Roz, has earned $134.4M domestically and $166.1M internationally. Following this achievement, DreamWorks has confirmed that a sequel is already in development.
Nyong’o, whose performance brought Roz to life, drew inspiration from AI voices like Alexa and Siri, channelling their “positive, can-do attitude” into Roz’s journey of self-discovery. The cast also includes Pedro Pascal, Catherine O’Hara, Stephanie Hsu, and Bill Nighy, with Jeff Hermann (The Boss Baby 2: Family Business) serving as producer.
The film continues to break records, earning $19.5M in Mexico alone, where it outperformed classics such as Frozen and Zootopia. Its global success, combined with its compelling story and emotional depth, has fueled anticipation for the upcoming sequel.
Speaking at Deadline Contenders, Sanders, a three-time Oscar nominee, shared his excitement about continuing Roz’s journey. “100% yes, there is one,” he confirmed. “We’re working on it now.”
The sequel will likely adapt The Wild Robot Escapes, the second book in the trilogy. The first film follows Roz, a shipwrecked robot, as she learns to survive on a deserted island, befriends the local wildlife, and becomes the adoptive parent of a gosling.
The Wild Robot, based on Peter Brown’s beloved book, is a testament to DreamWorks Animation's storytelling prowess. With the sequel now confirmed, fans can look forward to exploring the next chapter in Roz’s inspiring journey.
