After crossing $100 million at the global box office last weekend, DreamWorks Animation has confirmed a sequel to The Wild Robot is in development. Director Chris Sanders (three-time Oscar nominee for How to Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Stitch) announced the news this morning at Deadline Contenders.
“100% yes, there is one” he said, “we’re working on it now” - Sanders
The film stars Lupita Nyong’o as the voice of ROZZUM unit 7134—Roz—follows a robot shipwrecked on a deserted island. Over time Roz learns to survive and make friends with the animals on the island and becomes the adoptive parent of a gosling. The Wild Robot is based on the first book in the trilogy with the second book The Wild Robot Escapes being the obvious next chapter. Nyong’o who voiced AI voices like Alexa and Siri to bring Roz to life said she drew inspiration from their “positive, can-do attitude”. She said, “That was the starting point for Roz and her journey to self actualization and self expression”.
The film, which also features the voices of Pedro Pascal, Catherine O’Hara, Stephanie Hsu, and Bill Nighy, was produced by Jeff Hermann (The Boss Baby 2: Family Business) and was launched by Universal and DreamWorks Animation earlier this month.
