Yemi Solade is a respected veteran of Nigerian cinema and theatre, celebrated for his dynamic range and longevity in the industry. Born on January 31, 1960, he launched his performance career at just 17 during Festac ’77 (Festival of Arts and Culture) in Lagos. A dance champion from Surulere, he even represented Africa in international dance competitions in Spain.
Academically distinguished, Solade earned a degree in Dramatic Arts from Obafemi Awolowo University (O.A.U.), a Master’s in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, and additional qualifications in Sociology & Anthropology from Leicester University, UK, as well as International Relations from O.A.U..
He began his professional journey as a lecturer at institutions including the University of Maiduguri, Ramat Polytechnic, and Kaduna Polytechnic, where he taught general studies, communication skills, and literature. He later served as Assistant Director of the Kaduna Music and Drama Society before returning to O.A.U. in 1993 to become Artistic Director of Professor Ola Rotimi’s renowned theatre company.
Transitioning into screen acting, his debut was in the Yoruba film Oju Inu (“Insight”), directed by Wale Adenuga. Despite financial limitations delaying its wider release, it marked his entry into Nollywood and paved the way for roles in iconic Wale Adenuga TV series like Papa Ajasco, Super Story, This Life, and Odd World. He is also known for impactful performances in films such as Voiceless Scream, The Widow, Elevator Baby, Àjosepò, Dinner At My Place, Move Like A Boss, and Ijogbon.
