This July, there are several Nollywood films you should definitely add to your watchlist.
This year, Nollywood has delivered masterpiece after masterpiece, and there are still more blockbusters in store for the second half of the year. With titles like Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Oloture: The Journey, Ajosepo, Lakatabu, Muri & Ko, and many other exciting films making June a delight, here are some July movies you don't want to miss.
The Beads is about a woman who keeps living the same day where she got shot at her wedding over and over. It gives off Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow vibes. How did she get herself into this situation, and how will she get out of this time-travel misery? Will she be able to save herself? The film stars Zainab Balogun, Iya Rainbow, Shaffy Bello, Lateef Adedimeji, and Efa Iwara. It will premiere on Prime Video on July 12th.
What About Us is a suspense-filled drama that explores the complexities and tensions of marriage through the intertwined stories and secrets of two couples who are neighbours. Pastor Emmanuel Iren of CCI wrote the drama, and Kayode Kasum directed it. The movie stars Seyi Awolowo, Kunle Remi, Teniola Aladese, Folu Storms, and Uzor Arukwe. What About Us will be in cinemas nationwide on July 12th.
In Nigeria, there is a common prayer: "May we not look like who they are looking for." That’s exactly what happens in Wrong Number. The film follows the story of a man who gets mistakenly abducted by a gang looking for a celebrity. It all starts with a call to the wrong number and the kidnapping of the wrong person. The movie stars rapper Reminisce with Nancy Isime, Shaffy Bello, Seun Ajayi, Baaj Adebule, Mary Lazarus, and Bimbo Manuel. Wrong Number will hit theaters nationwide on July 19th.
The Man Died is inspired by the prison memoir of Africa’s first Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka. The movie sheds light on Soyinka’s experiences during the Nigerian Civil War, showcasing the harsh reality of political imprisonment and the relentless fight for justice and freedom in the country. The film features Wale Ojo as Wole Soyinka alongside Sam Dede, Nobert Young, Temilolu Fosudo, Abraham Amkpa, Segilola Ogidan, and William Idakwo. The Man Died will have a special premiere screening on July 12th to celebrate Wole Soyinka’s 90th birthday on July 13th. It will be in cinemas nationwide on July 14th.
Onye Egwu is a sports film that tells the story of a football star who faces challenges that stop him from playing the sport he loves. Later, he meets a rising football star who gives him reasons to believe again and changes his perspective on life. Uche Jombo directed the movie and co-produced it with Taiwo Adebayo Folashade. Onye Egwu stars Zubby Michael, Ufuoma McDermott, Lilian Esoro, Nancy Isime, Brodda Shaggi, Lateef Adedimeji, Ini Edo, Tina Mba, Toyin Abraham, and Uche Jombo. The film will premiere on Prime Video on July 19th.
House of Ga’a tells the history of the 18th-century life of Bashorun Gaa, a ferocious and feared kingmaker in the Oyo Empire who was more powerful than the kings (Alaafin) he enthroned. Directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters, the movie will land on Netflix on July 26th. House of Ga’a features Femi Branch, Dele Odule, Femi Adebayo, Funke Akindele, Toyin Abraham, Mike Afolarin, Stan Nze, Seun Akindele, and Ibrahim Chatta.
