Marvel Studios has just released a new trailer for the new Fantastic Four movie, ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps,’ ahead of its July 25 release to theaters.
The trailer teases a new addition to Marvel’s first family, with Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) and Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) expecting a baby. We also get a first look at the new Silver Surfer (Julia Garner) character cast as a woman instead of the traditional male, an unconventional take that has spurred mixed reactions from fans. This is not the first time the gender of a Marvel character has been changed in the MCU, but this is a rather important one.
Julia Garner has been cast to play Shalla-Bal, a different character from Norrin Radd, the original Silver Surfer we all know. This means Marvel is not gender-swapping the Silver Surfer but introducing a different character. As reported by IGN, Norrin Radd of the utopian planet Zenn-La sacrificed himself to save his world from the planet-consuming entity Galactus. Shalla-Bal Radd becomes the Silver Surfer and Galactus’s herald in exchange for sparing Zenn-La and the life of her beloved.
Pedro Pascal stars as Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic; Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, aka The Invisible Woman; Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, aka The Human Torch; and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm, aka The Thing.
This version of the screenplay from Eric Pearson is set in a 1960s retrofuturistic world where the Fantastic Four seem to be the only superheroes. Our heroes learn of the threat of Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and must stay united to protect a world that is slowly losing faith in them.
