After over two decades since the Oscar-winning Gladiator, director Ridley Scott is returning to the Colosseum with Gladiator II. In an exclusive interview with Collider, Scott confirmed that the theatrical version is his final cut, marking a shift from his previous films, which often included extended versions.
Scott revealed, “I’ve earned the right to have my final cut... My cut that goes out usually is my fault. It is my cut.” The decision comes as Scott has taken a unique approach to editing, working on scenes during filming rather than waiting until the end.
This sequel follows Paul Mescal as Lucius, a character seeking revenge and redemption in the gladiatorial arena. Like Maximus in the original film, Lucius is enslaved by Rome's military forces, led by General Marcus Aracius (played by The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal). Lucius channels Maximus’s fighting spirit to inspire a revolution that could alter the course of Rome.
With a star-studded cast that includes Connie Nielsen, reprising her role as Lucilla, along with Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, and Fred Hechinger, Gladiator II promises high-stakes action with new challenges like shark-infested waters and battles with rhinos in the Colosseum.
For fans, Scott’s confirmation that the theatrical release will be the definitive version might come as a surprise. Scott’s dedication to preserving the integrity of his films echoes his respect for filmmaking as a form of storytelling, one he continuously evolved since the first Gladiator left audiences captivated.
Gladiator II is shaping up to be an epic return to Rome, that viewers can experience as Scott intended—without an extended cut, but with all the intensity, drama, and spectacle intact. The film is set to release in 2024, bringing audiences back to the world of ancient Rome for a final journey.
