The European Film Academy has officially announced the 37th European Film Awards nominees, set to take place on December 7 in Lucerne, Switzerland. Among the highly anticipated films are Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door and Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, which have received four nominations each, including Best European Film. Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig is joining them in the category, which also garnered recognition in the Director and screenplay categories.
Emilia Pérez, set to premiere on Netflix in the U.S., received additional nominations for Director, Screenplay, and European Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón. This nomination marks a milestone, as Gascón becomes the first Trans actress to receive a European Film Award nod in this category. Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door, distributed by Sony Classics, saw the director also recognized for Screenplay, along with a European Actress nomination for Tilda Swinton, who previously won in 2011 for We Need to Talk About Kevin.
Despite missing a Best European Film nomination, Magnus von Horn’s The Girl With The Needle achieved three nods, including European Actress for Trine Dyrholm and Vic Carmen Sonne, and a Screenplay nomination shared by von Horn and Line Langebek. Renate Reinsve also joined the European Actress category for her performance in Armand, a film that received further attention in the European Discovery – Prix FIPRESCI category.
Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, a critical success, earned Best European Film and European Screenplay nominations. However, Demi Moore was notably absent from the European Actress category.
This year’s European Actor category includes some high-profile names: Daniel Craig for Queer, Abou Sangare for Souleymane’s Story, Franz Rogowski for Bird, Lars Eidinger for Dying, and Ralph Fiennes for Conclave. Fiennes’ nomination, in particular, has captured attention given the broad appeal of Conclave, distributed by Focus Features.
The European Director nominees consist of Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Almodóvar (The Room Next Door), Rasoulof (The Seed of the Sacred Fig), Andrea Arnold for Bird, and Maura Delpero for Vermiglio. Meanwhile, the Best Screenplay category includes Audiard, von Horn and Langebek, Almodóvar, Rasoulof, and Fargeat, highlighting the diverse range of storytelling talent among this year’s honorees.
