Idowu Philips, popularly known as Iya Rainbow (or Mama Rainbow), is a veteran Nigerian actress, film producer, and former healthcare worker who has played a significant role in Nollywood and Yoruba-language cinema. Born on 16 October 1942 in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria, she initially pursued a career as a nurse and worked for many years in general hospitals while also taking on theatre roles on the side.
Her stage name “Iya Rainbow” comes from the theatre group Osumare (meaning “rainbow”) led by Sir Hubert Ogunde, with which her late husband was closely involved.
After the death of her husband, Augustine Ayanfemi Phillips (who had been a collaborator in theatre), she transitioned from nursing into full-time acting. Over the decades, she has starred in dozens (hundreds in some sources) of films, including Oga Bolaji, Sugar Rush, The Narrow Path, and others.
Her performances are often praised for their emotional depth, especially in motherly or matriarch roles in Yoruba and Nollywood films. In addition to acting, she has also been involved in production and endorsements.
Throughout her career, she has been honoured with awards recognising her lifetime and industry contributions. For instance, she was honoured with an Industry Merit Award at the 2024 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
