Genoveva Kenechukwu Umeh, professionally known as Genoveva Umeh, is a British–Nigerian actress. Her performance in 'A Tune Away' earned her a nomination for Best Actress in a drama at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Award 2022. Notable for her impactful roles in Nigeria's first Netflix original crime thriller series 'Blood Sisters' and the young adult series 'Far From Home', Genoveva has proven her mettle in the industry. Her prominent film roles include 'One Lagos Night' in 2019.
Raised between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, Genoveva was born in Enugu, Enugu State, Nigeria, on May 8, 1995, to computer engineer Gaius Umeh and Nurse Ifeoma Umeh. Her early education took place at Command Children's School, Enugu, where she spent her formative years until the age of 12. Subsequently, her family relocated to the United Kingdom in 2006, and she completed her secondary and A-level education at St Mary's C of E High School in London.
Her passion for acting ignited during her secondary school years, prompting her to pursue it further by attending the part-time drama school, Identity School of Acting, UK, in 2012. During summer breaks, she showcased her talent by performing in plays at the Hammersmith Theatre in London. Post that, she earned an LLB Law degree from the University of Surrey, graduating with honors.
In 2018, Genoveva made the bold move to Lagos, Nigeria, to pursue her acting career. Her one-woman stage play, 'HOME,' debuted at the Lagos Fringe Festival and later toured in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Notably, she featured as Lami in the Rue14 Studios stage production, 'High,' addressing substance abuse among teenagers in 2018 and 2019.
Her breakthrough in the film industry came with the lead role in the 2020 film 'A Tune Away,' which garnered her a Best Actress nomination at the 2022 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards. Beginning her on-screen journey with a minor role in 'Love is War' in 2019, Genoveva later portrayed Anita in 'One Lagos Night,' released in 2021 exclusively on Netflix. Her portfolio also includes the character Khafilat in the BAFTA-nominated short film 'Lizard' (2020).
Admitted into the Ebonylife Creative Academy, Genoveva showcased her talent in short films such as 'Monitoring Spirits,' earning her the Best Supporting Actress accolade for her role as "Sara." Her repertoire expanded with appearances in other short films like "Reflections," "Focus," and "IJO." Director Kenneth Gyang's recommendation led to her audition for the role of 'Timeyin Ademola' in the Nigerian original crime thriller series 'Blood Sisters,' Netflix's inaugural series.
Her outstanding performances continued in 2022 with roles in 'Blood Sisters' and 'Far From Home,' and she added another notch to her belt with a role in the new season of MTV Shuga. Additionally, she appeared in the Amazon Prime original film 'Breath of Life' alongside esteemed actors like Wale Ojo, Sam Dede, Chimezie Imo, Tina Mba, among others.
