Top 20 most anticipated movies by Nigerians in the second half of 2020

The top twenty most watched out for movies for the rest of the year 2020 featuring Hollywood and Nollywood blockbusters that are yet to be released.

Talking about movies, the year 2020 has proven to be a hell of a movie itself with all kinds of spices added to it. The first half of the year was getting really interesting with the likes of Martin Lawrence and Will Smith riding and dying together in the Bad Boys for Life movie, Elisabeth Moss showing her terrified face at us on the big screens in The Invisible Man movie, Vin Diesel being brought back from the dead to become a superhuman killing machine in the Bloodshot movie. We all thought we would see more on the big screens, but we had to do the most on our digital devices.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has been a major player in the ploy to postpone the release dates of most of the top anticipated movies by movie lovers, we just have to keep waiting for the perfect time to finally see the beautiful Gal Gadot in her Wonder Woman suit, the third horror movie by the legendary writer of the Get Out movie in 2017 and Us movie in 2019, the Bollywood meets Nollywood movie by Hamisha Daryani Ahuja, the fun to watch Ryan Reynold in the definitely fun to be seen Free Guy movie, and a whole lot of top movies.

So, after a good survey, here below is the list of movies being anticipated by most Nigerians in no order of ranking.

 

1. Mulan (2020)

The Disney’s live-action movie that was initially announced to be released in movie theaters on March 27, 2020 was made to delay its release date by four months to July 24, 2020. The movie’s release date was later on postponed to Friday August 21, 2020. Starring Liu Yifei as Mulan, the movie narrates the story of a Chinese maiden who disguises as a male in order to protect and represent her ailing father to fight in a war to protect her country from invaders.

The film is based on a popular Chinese folklore, “The Ballad of Mulan”, and is a live-action for the animation film by Disney in 1998.

2. Top Gun: Maverick (2020)

Tom Cruise, the Mission Impossible actor stars as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the sequel to the 1986 action drama Top Gun, Top Gun 2. The film is scheduled to be released in movie theaters on December 23, 2020 after an initial release date of June 24, 2020 which was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic that shut down movie theaters around the world. Maverick (Tom Cruise) who is a top US Navy aviator is shown to be back in action fighting some enemy drones in the movie.

3. Tenet (2020)

Starring John Washington and Robert Pattinson, popular and award-winning filmmaker, Christopher Nolan, brings about an upcoming spy film titled Tenet. The movie is described to be a follow-up to the filmmaker’s war epic movie, Dunkirk in 2017. The movie which was earlier scheduled to be released in cinemas on July 17 got its release date to be postponed by 2 weeks amidst the global pandemic to July 31. Due to the exponential rise in the number of cases, the movie now has a new release date of August 12, 2020.

4. Ratnik (2020)

Ratnik is one of the best projects in the Nollywood movie industry from 2019 but for some reasons had to keep shifting its release dates. The last release was announced to be April 10, 2020, but due to the Coronavirus pandemic, it had to postpone. The new expected release date has now been projected to be on December 1, 2020. The Sci-Fi film was recognised to be the movie with the best costume designer in the African Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) 2020.

The movie by Dimeji Ajibola of the Flipsyde Studios stars the likes of Osas Ighodaro, Bolanle Ninalowo, Adunni Ade, Paul Utomi, Meg Otanwa, and some other top Nollywood stars.

5. Dune (2020)

Based on a 1965 Sci-Fi novel by Frank Herbert with the same name, Dune is a film directed by Denis Villeneuve and stars the likes of Timothee Chalamet, Jason Momoa, Zendaya, Dave Bautista, Rebecca Ferguson and Oscar Isaac amongst others.

Unlike other blockbusters this year, the release date of Dune has not changed and the movie will be arriving on December 18, 2020.

6. King of Boys II (2020)

After a successful first movie in 2018, Producer Kemi Adetiba continues the project with a King of Boys sequel. Following the events in the first movie, the producer announced in June 2019 that there will be a sequel to the film and since then have been hinting and teasing the KOB fans with her Instagram and Twitter accounts that they should expect a very big King of Boys 2 movie. 

The movie will most likely be recalling the likes of Sola Sobowale, Reminisce, Jide Kosoko, and the likes for their roles in the movie.

The producer hasn’t released any first look from the movie likewise has not announced any particular date for the release of the movie.

7. Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)

The Israeli princess, Gal Gadot will be returning as Diana Prince (A.K.A Wonder Woman) in the sequel to the DC Universe’s Wonder Woman film in 2017. The movie will be directed by Patty Jenkins, with Kristen Wiig and Pedro Pascal joining the sequel.

The movie will make its way to the movie theaters on October 2, 2020.

8. Train to Busan: Peninsula (2020)

South Korean filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho comes up with yet another iconic movie to sequel the first Train to Busan zombie apocalypse film in 2016. The movie will star the likes of Gang Dong-Won, Lee Jung-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, amongst others.

The movie will follow the story of Jung-seok (played by Gang Dong-Won), a soldier who is forced to reenter the infected zone on an assignment to a covert operation and will be released on the 15th day of July, 2020.

9. Candyman (2020)

Producer Jordan Peele helps in creating a spiritual version for the original horror film, Candyman in 1992. The Candy man movie is directed by Nia DaCosta and stars the likes of Tony Todd, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Vanessa Estelle Williams, Cassie Kramer amongst other top Hollywood actors.

Candyman film will now be released in movie theaters on September 25, 2020 after been postponed from June 12, 2020.

10. The Old Guard (2020)

Charlize Theron will be leading a group of immortal mercenaries in the Netflix’s The Old Guard movie that will be released on July 10 on Netflix. The movie is written by Greg Rucka and directed by Director Gina Prince-Bythewood.

Apart from the South African queen, Charlize Theron, the movie also stars the likes of KiKi Layne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, and Luca Marinelli amongst others.

11. Kambili: The Whole 30 Yards (2020)

Starring Nancy Isime as Kambili, Kambili: The Whole 30 Yards is romantic comedy Nollywood movie written by Ozioma Ogbaji and directed by Kayode Kasum.

Following the story of a spoilt and irresponsible soon to be 28 years old young lady who only has marrying at age 30 on her mind. When her plans gets shattered and her boyfriend breaks up with her, she plans to prove to him that she can be anything he wants in a wife material.

The movie was earlier stated to be released on June 12, 2020 but had to be postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

12. Free Guy (2020)

Ryan Reynolds will be playing the role of a bank teller called Guy who discovers he is a background character in an open world video game which is about to go offline in the Free Guy movie. Directed by Shawn Levy and produced by Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy and three more others, Free Guy film will also star the likes of Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi, Jacksepticeye, Joe Keery, Camille Kostek, and Utkarsh Ambudkar.

The movie, as of the time of this article, is still in the post production stages and has December 11, 2020 has its release date.

13. A Quiet Place II (2020)

Following the A Quiet Place movie in 2018, the movie still has John Krasinski as its director and introduces Cillian Murphy to play a new role of Emmett. The horror thriller film still stars Emily Blunt as Evelyn Abbott, Millicent Simmonds as Regan Abbott, and Noah Jupe as Marcus Abbott.

The Paramount Pictures’ A Quiet Place 2 movie earlier slated to be released on March 20, 2020 now has a release date of September 4, 2020.

14. Fate of Alakada: The Party Planner

 From the winner of the best actress in a drama movie at the African Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), Toyin Abraham, comes the fourth movie in the Alakada movie franchise titled the Fate of Alakada. The Nollywood comedy movie will be starring the likes of Toyin Abraham herself, Samuel Perry (Broda Shaggi), Odunlade Adekola, Davido, Mercy Eke, Alex Ekubo, Bolanle Ninalowo, Jeremiah Ogbodo (Swanky) and many more top actors in the Nigerian movie industry.

The movie was earlier to be released on April 3, 2020, but the release date was delayed due to the Coranavirus pandemic with no specific new date for the release.

15. The New Mutants (2020)

The Marvel’s X-Men spin-off has kept a lot of its fans on their heels as it kept postponing its release date. It was first announced to be released August 2018 but was pushed back to February 2019 to prevent a clash with the Deadpool 2 movie. It was later postponed to April 2020 following the Disney’s acquisition of Fox, but that didn’t stand either when the Coronavirus forced it to postpone once again till August 28, 2020.

The horror/sci-fi movie adapted from a Marvel comics is written by Josh Boone and Knate Lee, directed by Josh Boone, and stars the likes of Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Blu Hunt, Alice Braga, Henry Zaga and many others.

16. Antebellum (2020)

Following the footsteps of the producer of Get Out and Us, Jordan Peele, Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz directed the Antebellum movie. The horror thriller movie stars the likes of Janelle Monae, Jena Malone, Gabourey Sidibe, Kiersey Clemons, Eric Lange, Marque Richardson and many others.

The film was earlier scheduled to be released April 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic it had to push its release date to August 21, 2020.

17. Namaste Wahala (2020)

From a businesswoman turn filmmaker, Hamisha Daryani Ahuja, comes this iconic Nigerian/Indian rom-com movie that infuses the Nigerian and Indian culture in it. “Namaste Wahala” translated as “Hello Trouble” will be starring the likes of Ini Dima-Okojie, Ruslaan Mumtaz, Richard Mofe Damijo, Joke Silva, Osas Ighodaro, Anee Icha, Sujata Sehgal, Koye Kekere Ekun, Ibrahim Suleiman, Imoh Eboh, and Frod in the roller coaster of romance and fun-filled film as promised by the director.

The movie is one of the first Nollywood movies to get their release dates altered by COVID-19 pandemic as its release date earlier slated to be on April 10, 2020 is forced to postpone to October 2020, as announced by the director on her Instagram page.

18. Black Widow (2020)

Scarlett Johansson will be reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU’s) solo adventure of the Black Widow film adapted from the Black Widow character in the Marvel’s Avengers movies. The movie will be directed Cate Shortland and will also star Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff, Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark (as rumoured), and many others.

The movie earlier slated to release on May 1, 2020 will now be released on November 6, 2020 amidst the Coronavirus pandemic.

19. Death on the Nile (2020)

 

After a success with the mystery solving movie in 2017 titled Murder on the Orient Express, the character, Detective Hercule Poirot now has to investigate the murder of a young heiress on a cruise ship on the Nile River.

The movie is directed by Kenneth Branagh who will also be reprising his role as Hercule Poirot, and stars Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Letitia Wright, Annette Benning and many others.

The crime/mystery drama has a release date of 9 October, 2020.

20. Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origin (2020)

Starring the Crazy Rich Asians’ star Henry Golding as Snake Eyes, the Netflix’s Money Heist’s star Ursula Corbero as The Baroness, the Ready or Not movie star Samara Weaving as Scarlett, and Andrew Koji as Storm Shadow, comes a G.I Joe story written by Evan Spiliotopoulos and directed by Robert Schwentke.

The Snake Eyes movie which is a prequel in the G.I. Joe film spinoff is to be released on 23 October, 2020.

I'm definitely seeing every movie on this list. You guys should try to go and see the Murder on the Orient Express movie from 2017, this Death on the Nile will be a great movie too.
