The CW picks up the classic Cartoon Network's superhero series, The Powerpuff Girls, for a live-action development.
Based on the much loved Craig McCracken’s Cartoon Network series of the same name about three super-powered young girls, Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup, who were created accidentally by Utonium by combining sugar, spice, and everything nice with the mysterious Chemical X. The story followed the activities of the young trio defending the city of Townsville from evildoers. The new live-action series in development at the CW will be a grown-up version of The Powerpuff Girls and will be written and executive produced by Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier.
The summary from Cody and Regnier reads, “The Powerpuff Girls used to be America’s pint-sized superheroes. Now they’re disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?”
The executive producers have made great projects in the past, Regnier impacted has a producer on the recent Veronica Mars revival, The CW’s iZombie, Fox’s Sleepy Hollow, and Showtime’s SMILF. Cody, on the other hand, has won an Academy Award in 2008 for writing Juno. She also co-created Amazon comedy series, One Mississippi, and Showtime's United States of Tara.
