It picked up nice and smooth with many potentials, but we soon had to face a reality that had raised its ugly head since 2019. You guessed right, Covid-19. Despite the current change and circumstance due to the pandemic that pervades 2020, the Nollywood movie industry in Nigeria has continually remained productive like ever before with blockbuster movies' release. The movie stars Toyin Abraham, Broda Shagi, Odunlade Adekola, Mercy Eke, Davido, Peruzzi, Cobhams, Funke Bucknor, Anto Lecky, and many others. Fate of Alakada is a 2020 Nollywood written by Yakubu Olawale and Ozioma Ogbaji, co-produced by Mimi Bartels. It is the third version of Abraham's Alakada Franchise. The movie was directed by Kayode Kasum, produced by Toyin Abraham, and developed by the FilmOne production crew. Against all odds, the movie was released on Independence Day ( October 1st, 2020) despite postponement earlier scheduled for April due to Covid19. The film triggered over ₦30 million in 4 weeks despite restricted seating capacity, and it is also the highest-grossing in the post-Covid-19 lockdown. The movie is about Yetunde (Toyin Abraham) living a fake live right from "Alakada Reloaded," hiding under the deceit of being a successful Lagos individual. After finding her way into a movie premiere event in her usual manner, she pretends to be an event planner upon seeing the profession's potentials, and the onus lies on her to bring celebrities she claimed to know. The movie has gathered momentum within a little time frame and is one of Nollywood's top ten highest-grossing for a holiday weekend.


2. Who's The Boss (2020)

A 2020 romantic movie directed by Chinaza Onuzo, being his debut, is replete with drama. It is premised against the background of the millennial women practice in Nigeria, directly representing the modern Nigerian woman. It featured terrific stars like Sharon Ooja, Funke Akindele, Tayo Faniran, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Segun Arinze, Ini Dima-Okojie, and Beverly Osu. The movie hit the screen on February 28th, 2020, with excellent approval ratings, and it is one of the most popular Nigerian Nollywood movies.


3. Rattlesnake (The Ahanna Story) (2020)

The Nollywood blockbuster was directed by the veteran actor Ramsey Nouah alongside Charles Okpaleke, a remake of Amaka Igwe's 1994 sensation, Rattlesnake. Rattlesnake (The Ahanna Story) is the story of a young man who lives the life he desired through evil ways. Prominent stars such as Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Bucci Franklin, Tobi Bakre, Ay Makun, Emeka Nwagbaraocha, Odera Adimorah, Elma Mbadiwe, Osas Ighodaro, and Brutus Richards all featured in Rattlesnake. Small Chops is a Nigerian drama movie ably written by Chika Ike with a feminist perspective, directed by Robert Peters. The film tells the story of Nikita (Chika Ike), a dancer at a bar who falls in love and catches the attention of Casper, a business tycoon. Things didn't work out as planned from both sides. The movie recalled Chike Ike, Max Canvenham, Toyin Abraham, Nkem Owoh, Omotunde Adebowale David, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Eucharia Anuobi, Rachel Okonkwo, and Afeez Ayetoro. The film hit the cinemas on January 31st, 2020.

Citation is one of the most anticipated movies in 2020 across Nigeria. The film was written by Tunde Babalola and directed by Kunle Afolayan, which captured female students' sexual harassment on college campuses in Nigeria with extension beyond Nigeria's borders. The movies is centered on a hardworking student Moremi (Temi Otedola) who accuses her lecturer Prof. N' Dyare (Jimmy Jean-Louis), before the University panel. Starring Ini Edo, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Temi Otedola, Ibikun Awosika, Yomi Fash-Lanso, Gabriel Afolanyan, and others. The movie is said to be one of the popular Nollywood movies in 2020. The initial release was on October 31st but hit Netflix on November 6th. One of the best movies 2020 had to offer, ensure to stream on Netflix. 


6. This Lady Called Life (2020)

One of the most inspiring Nollywood movies of 2020, this movie tells the story of a single mother who's doing all it takes to hit the crest of her chosen career as a chef. The film was written by Toluwani Obayan and directed by Kayode Kasum. The lead role, Aiye ( which means "Life"), was played by stellar actress Bisola Aiyeola and supported by great actors such as Wale Ọjọ́, Lota Chukwu, Jemima Osunde, and Tina Mba. If you haven't seen it, It's not a movie you want to miss! 


7. Dear Affy (2020)

One of the hilarious movies that hit the cinemas in 2020, this Romcom tells the story of a young couple preparing for their wedding ceremony. Still, things begin to go haywire when the groom-to-be gets in a sex scandal with one of his superiors at work in an attempt to selfishly secure a multi-million naira deal that would afford him the chance to embezzle funds. The whole movie spins into a fiasco, supplying hilarious entertainment to viewers. It was released on February 14th and raked a staggering ₦39.6 million at the Box Office. The movie, written and directed by Samuel Olatunji, starred top-notch actors and actresses like Kehinde Bankole, Odunlade Adekola, Toyin Abraham, Bimbo Ademoye, amongst others. 


8. Mama Drama (2020)

This impeccable drama, released on March 20th, 2020, tells the story of an infertile woman who pays her assistant millions of naira to be her surrogate mother. Many twists and turns to the story make it a classic yet elegantly poised Nollywood story. Many Nollywood superstars on the project like Osas Ighodaro, Kehinde Bankole, Femi Adebayo, Shaffy Bello, and many more notable actors. Seyi Babatope directed the movie. Pen it down. It's worth your while.


9. Eyimofe (This Is My Desire) (2020)

Maybe not as popular as the others, but the quality of the movie in all facets stands sky-high, more so because of its relatable story. It tells the story of two people just trying to knock down their day-to-day challenges in Lagos. Sounds simple, right? You'd be surprised at how captivating it gets as the clock ticks away. Starring top-dogs in the industry such as Kemi Lala Akindoju, Mary Agholor, Jude Akuwudike, Tomiwa Edun, and many others hit the Cinemas on February 24th and has received so much praise from viewers across the nation and even beyond. Great Movie! 


10. The Legend of Inikpi (2020)

The Legend of Inikpi, produced by the fantastic Nollywood star Mercy Johnson and directed by Frank Rajah Arase, tells the classic African story of two kingdoms edging closer to an epic battle. The king of one of the domains soon learns that he has to pay the ultimate price for victory, a fee that seems to be a compelling and unpleasing Deja vú. This movie is perfect for lovers of epic films, with a pinch of modern-day spice. It premiered on January 24th, 2020, and has since then made more than ₦20 million at the Box Office. You definitely shouldn't pass on this one. 



Nollywood, in all honesty, has truly outdone itself this year. The industry has been strong and resolute. Indeed, most of them haven't made the big bucks as they should with the turnout of events, but they have proven that money is not everything. Your entertainment is more critical. There you have it!
